Hello, my name is Autumn Persinger and I am a disabled student at Eastern Michigan University studying Social Work. As someone who is extremely passionate about social justice and disability advocacy, I am a volunteer with the Washtenaw Association for Community Advocacy. Here’s a few fun facts about me: I live on my own on campus made possible by Self Determination services. My favorite hobbies are crafting and reading. I am the co-president of the Disability Revolution Club at EMU. I have a form of Muscular Dystrophy, called Spinal Muscular Atrophy and I am a full-time wheelchair user. When I was first diagnosed at the age of 1 year old and 1 month, it was unsure if I would be able to attend college. How would college be possible for someone who has high medical needs? How would living on my own be possible because of my high care needs? How would I find the support that I need to receive 24/7 care?
Well, those answers were provided when we started receiving services through Community Mental Health the summer before my freshman year at EMU. I received 24/7 Self Directed and Self Determination services. I decide on all employment decisions, I direct my care and needs, and I schedule and manage to make sure my care needs are thoroughly met. I currently have a total of 7 staff to help me participate in college with my full potential. My staff assists me with all activities of daily living that includes but not limited to dressing, household chores, getting up in the morning, and more. Additionally, my staff assist with attending classes as an additional physical support by helping with notetaking and managing class materials. They also assist with feeding tube nutrition, airway clearance, and non-invasive ventilator management.These support are necessary for my survival and participation in life. I would not be alive if it weren’t for my care staff.
Without my care and services, living on my own and attending full-time university would not be possible. Also, without these care and services, I would not be planning for graduate school and my career as a trauma-informed clinical therapist. I am thankful that these services allow me to receive the same college experience as someone who is not disabled.
